Palestinian Development Library

The Centre has established a development library which includes an up-to-date library and information center. The unit, created in 1998, is being expanded to become a repository for written and audio-visual references, reports, and documents that examine development issues at the local, regional and international levels.

The Palestinian Development Library provides research information and data to governments, NGOs and to individuals, through the resources available at the Centre itself or via its links with other Arab and international development studies centers. At present, it provides the following materials:

  • 4815 books
  • 12 periodicals
  • 2500 publications, in both Arabic and English.

Furthermore, the Library contains a number of videotape, CD, and electronic resources which can be accessed electronically via  the Center’s website. The Development Library also provides the following services:

1. Website services

  • Library Catalogue (search): (On-line public access catalog) search for the books available in the Resource Centre.
  • Development Bibliography: A searchable  annotated development bibliography; book abstracts can also be viewed through this page
  • Related links: Links to development related websites
  • Electronic Resources: Electronic material on developmental issues (such as studies, reports, articles and documents) indexed according to subjects (such as economics, women and societies).

2. Deposit Centers

The Library has 16 deposit centers spread throughout the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT) located in libraries and information centers. The Library displays material at these deposit centers where members of the public can borrow or copy selected items. These deposit centers are located in the following areas:

  • West Bank : Municipality Libraries of Jericho, Hebron, Tulkarm, Jenin, Nablus, Qalqilya, and in the American University / Jenin.
  • In Gaza Strip District: Gaza city: Palestinian Red Crescent Libraries, Rashad al-Shawwa Center, Al-Azhar University and al-Qattan Center.

  • Khan Yunis City: Culture and Free Though Association, and al-Quds Open University Libraries.
  • Al-Nuseirat: Culture and Science Library, Khaled al-Hasan Cultural Center, Al-Nuseirat Municipality.

  • Rafah: Rafah Municipality Library.

3. General Services

  • Acquisitions: The Palestinian Development Library is always looking to expand its collection by buying from local and international publishers and participating in book fairs. The Centre is always grateful for any donations it receives and participates in exchange relations.
  • Development in Palestine - An Annotated Bibliography (1990): The Library has completed an annotated bibliography of reference material on development in Palestine. It has succeeded in collecting most of the titles listed. The Library is in the process of updating this bibliography.

  • Cataloging: The Palestinian Development library is classified by the Library of Congress Classification.
  • Database: The Library uses CDS-Isis, a program used in libraries for documentation, data entry and information retrieval.

4. Public services and access

The Library opens daily from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm, except on Fridays and Sundays.

  • Responding to inquiries: The Centre responds promptly to inquiries via telephone, e-mail and fax.

  • Photocopying:  Photocopying is available at the Library at a cost of 20 ag. per copy.
  • Circulation: The Library provides free circulation for Birzeit students, academics and employees, and an annual subscription of 50 NIS others.

5. Distribution of publications

The Library distributes its publications, using the following means:

  • Distribution to institutions and individuals listed on the exchange or special donations lists of the Centre.
  • Exhibiting material at workshops and during Centre activities.
  • Distribution to the 16 depository centers throughout the OPT
