Palestine
Human Development Report, 1998-1999.
The Palestine Human
Development Report 1998-99 is the first and most comprehensive report to date
on the stat us
and needs of human development in the
West Bank
and Gaza Strip. It provides an overview of the social, human and economic
indicators based on data provided by the Palestinian central Bureau of
Statistics. It analyses the challenges and opportunities that influence the
human development process in
Palestine, given
the peculiar context characterized by ongoing occupation and attempts at state
-building. It also offers rich material and data for comparing development
achieved in the Palestinian society with development achieved in other
societies around the world. Finally, it highlights the issues and problems
that require more extensive research in the future. The Report represents a
genuine
Palestinian
endeavor, rooted in the demand of the Palestinian public and its appeal for
development and progress at all levels.
The Palestine Human
Development is divided into five chapters and includes a number of statistical
appendices. Chapter One provides an overview of the conceptual and
methodological framework of the Report. Chapter Two presents data on the state
of human development in
Palestine.
Chapters. Three to Five discuss the role of the PNA, of economic factors and
of civil society’s institutions in impacting human development in the West
Bank and
Gaza.
Chapter Six concludes by discussing the challenges and recommendations for the
future.
