Text Book: General Chemistry, Principles & Structure by J.E.Brady, 5th

Ed., John Sons. 1990.

Course Description &  Objectives:

This is the second of two courses of chemistry designed for first-year science students. With the first course (131), it enables the students to cover most of the Basic principles and concepts in chemistry. This course includes thermodynamics, chemical equilibrium, electrochemistry, metals and their compounds, transition metals and theories that account for the formation of their compounds, transition metals and theories that account for the their complexes. The course objectives can be outlined as follows:

1.                                           Understand laws of chemical thermodynamics and applications

2.                                           Study and comprehend chemical equilibrium of different systems

a.                                                                   Gaseous systems

b.                                                                   Aqueous systems

c.                                                                   Solution in equilibrium with solids

d.                                                                   Solution containing complexing ions

3.                                           Understand the concepts in electrochemistry: electrolysis and galvanic cells. Utilize these concepts in stoichiometric calculations of potentials, concentrations as well as thermodynamic equilibrium constants. To study various applications of electrochemistry reactions quantitatively.

4.                                           Study and understand chemical kinetics and be able to use the laws, write mechanism and study the factors that affect reactions rates.

5.                                           Study metals and their compounds, occurrence, behavior and importance.

6.                                           Study the transition metals and their compounds and the different theories that account for the formation of these compounds
