Dr.Mohamed M. Nasr

Dr. Mohamed Nasr was born in Im Khaled in September 1945. He got his high school degree (Tawjihi) from Tulkarem, Palestine in 1964. After this, he worked as assistant manager in a supplies and provisions company in Kuwait, continuing until 1972, when he became the sales representative for a Japanese company also operating in Kuwait. While working, he studied as a part-time student in the Beirut Arab University, Lebanon, graduating in 1969 with a B.A. in Commerce. After leaving his studies for a while he decided to return to continue to persue higher degrees.

Dr. Nasr recieved his M.B.A. in Marketing in 1980 from Wayne State University, Detriot, Michigan, U.S.A. for which he recieved a Graduate Professional Scholarship. Subsequently, he got his M.A. in Economics in 1985 and a Ph.D. in Economics in the following year, both from Ohio State University.

His major fields of speciality in economics are Industrial Economics, Money, Banking, Monetary Theory, and Economic Developing and Economic Planning. Dr. Nasr has significant teaching experience, working as a graduate teaching associate in Ohio State University from 1982-1986. Following this, he was an Assistant Professor in the Economic Department in Yarmouk University in Irbid, Jordan from 1986-1993 and served as chairman of the department between 1991 and 1993. Dr. Nasr left Yarmouk University on a sabbatical leave to the Applied Science University in Amman, Jordan and, in 1994, came to Birzeit University. In 1995 he was appointed Assistant Dean for the Faculty of Commerce and Dean for the Faculty of Commerce, the following year.

Dr. Nasr has participated in the following conferences:

  • The International Palestinian Studies Conference, held in Birzeit in November 1995.
  • The Contribution of Turkey for the Construction and Development of Palestine, in Ankara, Turkey in 1994.
  • The Economics of Peace in the Middle East, which was held in Yarmouk University in December 1993.

    Dr. Nasr has published many papers and two books in his field. He has actively participated in many committees in the universities he taught in, such as the Masters program in Economics in both Yarmouk University and Birzeit University. He has performed many consultations, now a part-time consultant for the Ministry of Planning and International Co-operation in the Palestinian National Authority. Dr. Nasr is a member of the Arab Economic Association in Palestine.


    Dr. Adel Zaghah

    Dr. Adel Zaghah was born in Nablus, Palestine in 1956. He finished his high school degree (Tawjihi) also in Nablus in 1975. Dr. Zaghah graduated from Birzeit University in 1981 with a B.A. in Economics and Business Adminstration, now working as Assistant Professor in the Economics department at Birzeit. During his time as a student at Birzeit, he was a active student and was elected as a member of the Student Council.

    Dr. Zaghah recieved his M.A. in Economics and Economic Development from Vanderbilt University in the U.S.A. at the beginning of 1984. He then returned to Birzeit to work as an instructor in the Economics department, until 1989 when he recieved a scholarship from the DAAD (the German Academic Exchange Service).

    He received his Ph.D in Economics and Public Finance from the Free University in Berlin in July 1994. He returned to Birzeit University as chairman of the Economics Department.

    Elected as a treasurer of the Arab Economists Association in Jerusalem in 1995, Dr. Zaghah published many books and research papers, both independently and in association with other colleagues. He also offers consultation in his field.


    Dr. Said Jamil Haifa

    Dr. Said Haifa was born in May 1951 in Mazra'a Sharkia, a village near Ramallah. He graduated from Ramallah Secondary School, going on to study economics in the University of Jordan, where he recieved his B.A. in Economics and Statistics in 1974. In the same year he began work in the main office of the Arab Bank in Amman, Jordan. After that, he continued his studies in McGill University in Montreal, where he recieved both his M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics.

    In 1980, he returned to Palestine as Chairman of the Department of Economics in Birzeit University, serving another year as chairman again in 1984. He was appointed as the Dean of the Faculty of Commerce in Birzeit University between 1986 and 1990.

    Dr. Said has also worked as a consultant for many international organizations including UNIDO, ESCWA, UNDP, UNCTAD and others. He is a member and one of the founders of the Arab Economists Association, chairman of the board of the Palestinian Trade Promotion Organization (PTPO), and a member of the Palestinian delegation for the Palestinian Development Conference.

    Dr. Said has participated in many international conferences, including "Living conditions of the Palestinian People" in Geneve. He has written and published many papers and a book about the industrial sector in the West Bank and Gaza between 1975 and 1987. His papers include "The Housing Needs for the Establishment of an Independent Palestinian State".

    Mr. Yasser M.Abu-Hijleh

    Mr. Yasser Abu-Hijleh was born in August 1961 in Nablus, Palestine. He finished his high school and got his Tawjihi in 1979.




    Mr. Bahjat M. Itayem

    Mr. Bahjat Itayem was born in December 1960 in Al-Bireh, Ramallah. He received his Tawjihi degree from the Jerusalem Industrial Secondary School. He received his B.A. in Economics from Florida International University in Miami in 1987 and his M.A. from the University of Wisconsin in Milwakee.

    After finishing his studies, Mr. Itayem worked in the PLO Economic Department in Tunisia. A year after that he went to the U.S.A. and worked in business until 1993. Now he is instructor in the Economics Department of Birzeit University. He has made many consultantances in his field, including for PECDAR in the ex-detainees training program. He has participated in conferences including the DATA conference concerned with taxation between Jordan, Palestine, and Israel. In 1995, he published a paper about the Palestinian Informal Sector.

    Mr. Itayem is a member in the Arab Economists Association, the Palestinian Red Cresent Association and a founder of the Bireh Youth Foundation.




    Mr. Yasser Mahmoud Abu-Hijleh

    Mr. Yasser Abu-Hijleh was born in August 1961 in Nablus in the West Bank. He finished high school in 1979, and in the same year he entered Yarmouk University in Irbid, Jordan, where he recieved his B.A. in Economics in 1982. He recieved his Masters degree in Economics in 1989 from Iowa State University in Ames. He was a research associate and teaching assistant in Iowa.

    In 1991, he came to work as a lecturer in the Economics Department at Birzeit University. He also worked as a consultant to Palestinian Economic Council for Development and Reconstruction (PECDAR) between 1993 and 1994.

    Mr. Abu-Hijleh was a counterpart to International Monetary Fund and World Bank Committees visiting the West Bank. He has also worked on the project to reorganize and develop the city of Al-Bireh. He also was a cotrainer in workshops held by DAI and USAID.

    In the academic field, Mr. Abu-Hijleh has undertaken research on "Central Place Models and Strategies for Regional Planning" and Development Strategies. He has participated in a number of conferences in the U.S.A. and Jordan.

    Mr. Abu-Hijleh is a member of the Technical Consultation Committee in Public Finance to assist the Palestinian negotating team.




    Mrs. Laila Anton Dabeet

    Mrs. Dabeet was born in September 1960 in Ramallah, and finished her Tawjihi certificate in 1977. She received a diploma in 1978, majoring in accounting. She also participated in many workshops about printing (both Arabic and English), computer use and Hebrew. She also trained in Leehigh University

    .

    After that, in 1980, she joined Birzeit University as the secratary of the Faculty of Commerce and the Department of Economics. She has given five workshops to trainee secretaries, teaching them filing systems, telephone skills, and the use of office machines.

    Mrs. Dabeet is a member of many committees including the Staff Union of Birzeit University, the Womens Committee Union, and the board of the Orthodox Church in Ramallah.
