The Faculty of Engineering at Birzeit University was established in 1979 with the development of five-year programs leading to the Bachelor of Science Degree in the fields of Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.  A fourth department, Architectural Engineering, was added to the Faculty in 1990.  An M.Sc. program in Water Engineering (joint with the International Institute for Infrastructural, Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering – IHE – The Netherlands) was launched in the 1997/1998 academic year.  Another M.Sc. programme in urban planning and design was launched in the second semester of 2002/2003 academic year. This programme is executed in cooperation with Dortmund University in Germany. A new program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering started in 2001/2002 academic year.

The five-year program in engineering consists of 160 credit hours including a graduation project.  Its effectiveness was proven through the outstanding performance of the graduates in their respective professional fields as well as in their graduate studies at well-known universities abroad.  The faculty’s policy has always been to maintain the highest standards of academic achievement and to expose students to the latest technology throughout their engineering education.  This stems from the Faculty’s belief in the importance of engineers in building a strong economy based on innovation and technology transfer.

In the 2002/2003 academic year 320 new students enrolled in the Faculty of Engineering.  The total number of students now exceeds 1200 students.

The Faculty teaching staff consists of 32 Ph.D. holders and 10 Instructors (M.Sc. holders).  In addition there are 15 teaching and research assistants, 11 technicians and 5 secretaries.

The Faculty of Engineering is housed in a large building with three wings.  The main wing contains all Faculty offices, classrooms, and lecture halls. It also contains three student computer laboratories meant for use by all engineering students.  The second wing houses the laboratories, and the third wing houses the workshops.  The Faculty of Engineering buildings were donated by the Palestinian Engineering Omar-El-Aggad, and were officially opened in 1985.
