Background

The mechanical Engineering Department was established in the year 1979 with very limited resources of the faculty staff and laboratories. Within its first twenty years, the department has become a leading and pioneering department in the region in education, research, and community service.

Since its establishment, the department has always given a very high priority to the development of its academic program and curricula responding to the needs of the Society and keeping pace with international academic developments and trends while preserving the values, policies and strategies of the Country.

During the last five years, the department has witnessed a comprehensive development in the academic programs and curricula offered. This has been done in the light of modern concepts and international standards after adapting them to suit the nature of the Society. The department has also paid great attention to the quality of implementation and delivery of the programs and curricula. Interactive teaching methods and technologies including computers and information networks, are emphasized to provide an environment which fosters the students' creative - thinking and self-learning abilities. This enables them to cope with rapidly advancing technologies.

In the academic year 1998, the department began to implement new program, which divides the students into two majors; Design and Manufacturing and applied thermo-Fluids. The design courses include CAD/CAM courses.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:

·  To educate qualified students and prepare them for future careers as professional mechanical engineers, researchers, and/or consultants. Emphasis is placed on the generation, conversion, transmission, and utilization of mechanical and thermal energy including the design, manufacturing, and operation of the related mechanical devices.

· To provide excellent and balanced education for all qualified students taking into account the student's special interest by means of a group of elective courses and the senior year graduation project.

· To prepare the students for a long and productive professional life by combining strong engineering science fundamentals with design and synthesis and augmenting it by practical hands-on experience in the laboratory facilities and during the one semester industrial training program.

· To graduate engineers equipped with strong communication skills and mastering of computers as applied to a wide range of mechanical engineering disciplines.

· To generate new engineering knowledge through a strong and ambitious commitment to interdisciplinary research.
