The Faculty of Engineering implements the following programs and projects in cooperation with regional and international organizations. This is in line with the philosophy of the university that it cannot grow or develop without its openness and without links and cooperation on the regional and international revels.
- Development of cost-effective reclamation technologies for domestic wastewater and the appropriate agricultural use of the treated effluent under (semi) arid climate conditions (CORETECH) (2000 - 2003):
The main aim of this project is:
- To study a cost effective optimization and safe usage of the limited water nutrient resources in the region.
- To minimize the environmental impact due to the discharge of raw domestic sewage by introducing new technology that allows for using it in fertilizing the soil.
The executing institutions include:
- Wageningen Agricultural University, The Netherlands, WAU.
- Department of Environmental Technology
- Department of Irrigation & Water Engineering, IWE.
- Birzeit University, Palestine, BZU
- National Research Center, Egypt, NRC.
- Water Environment and Research Center, Jordan University, WERSC.
- National Foundation of Agricultural Research, Greece, NFAR.
- National University of Ireland, Galway, NUIG.
- Capacity building on wastewater valorization for agricultural production in the Middle East area by using low-cost treatment technologies (WASTEVAL) (97-2002)
The aim of this project is to enhance the capacity at the counterpart institutions with respect to the development and proper application of low-cost treatment and recovery methods for waste and wastewater originating from municipalities, small size communities and agro-industries.
The project will also help in the development of specialized staff (M.Sc. and Ph.D. students) in the waste and wastewater technology. This will be through short courses, seminars and workshops.
The executing organizations include:
- Wageningen University:
- Department of Environmental Technology
- Department of Ecological Agriculture
- Department of Irrigation and Water Engineering
- International Institute of Infrastructure, Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering, Delft.
- Birzeit University, West Bank, Palestinian Authority.
- National Research Center, Department of Water Pollution Control, Egypt.
- Water Environment Research and Study Center, University of Jordan.
- Sustainable management of the West Bank and Gaza aquifers (2000-2003):
The main objective of this project is to increase the understanding of the sustainable yield of the West Bank and Gaza aquifers under a range of future economic, demographic and land use scenarios, and to identify and evaluate alternative groundwater management options.
The project is sponsored by the DFID (British Government), Newcastle University with close cooperation with Palestinian Water Authority and British Geological Survey will conduct the project activities. The project will help in enhancing the capacity of the Faculty of Engineering at Birzeit University in conducting research related to water resources.
- Development of Master Programme in Landscape Architecture at Birzeit University in co-operation with the Agricultural University of Norway (NLH) - Norway (1998 - 2001).
The aim of the programme is to provide post-graduate training at Birzeit University in the Area of Landscape Architecture for students, employees from municipalities, ministries and Councils, NGO's and from the private sector in Palestine . The programme addresses target groups at local, regional and national level. The programme also seeks to increase the capacity and competence of staff at the Department of Architecture at Birzeit University with respect to landscape planning and design issues . The programme seeks to upgrade the curriculum in landscape planning at the undergraduate and graduate level, and initiate joint research projects focusing on sustainable development of the Palestinian territories.
