  • Dr. Majdi El-Malki is the director of the IALIIS at Birzeit University. He holds a Ph.D. in Rural Development Sociology from Nanterre University (Paris X) in France.. He has a long work experience in different institutions. His research interests include the areas of socio-economic changes in the Palestinian society, patrimonialism, social policy, development, globalization, democracy and civil society. He has published several books, including "Singapore-Taïwan - The cost of success: A critical review, and the possibilities of local implementations", "Socio-economic changes in three Palestinian villages: rural family reproduction under the Israeli occupation", "The socio-economic impacts of the Intifada on refugees. The Jalazon refugee camp case", “Towards a Sociology of Civil Resistance: Palestinian Society during the second Intifada", MUWATIN-The Palestinian Institute For the Study of Democracy, 2004 and "Social and Economic Characteristics of the Informal Sector in the West Bank and Gaza Strip”, MAS, 2004.

    He has also published many articles, including "French N.G.Os", "Democracy and civil society in Palestine: Review of Palestinian debate" in al-Siyasa al-Filastiniya, "Le néo-clientélisme comme stratégie d’adaptation de la société palestinienne pendant l'Intifada d'El - Aqsa : facteurs et déterminants." Revue d'Etudes Rurales, June, 2005 and “Le système du soutien sociale informel et les relations de néo-patrimonialisme en Palestine", Les Annales De L'autre Islame, 2001.

  • Ms. Einas Khayyat is the Institute's Coordinator and Administrative Assistant. She graduated from Birzeit University with a Bachelors in Civil Engineering and Minor in Planning and Transportation in June 2004. Ms. Khayyat worked in different institutions such as Welfare Association and PECDAR. Moreover, she is working in the Office of Academic Development at Birzeit University as coordinator and Administrative Assistant. Furthermore, Ms. Khayyat took several training courses in management and SOFTDESK program.

  • Ms. Naheda Sabbah is the Executive Secretary of the IALIIS. She holds a Diploma in Executive Secretary from the Ramallah Women's Training Center- UNRWA as well as a Diploma in Medical Secretary from the same center. Prior to her work at Birzeit, Ms. Sabbah was an executive secretary at Al-Quds Open University and an executive secretary at the PNA Ministry of Health.

  • Mr. Mo'tasim Afanih is the head librarian at the IALIIS. He holds a Diploma in the study of libraries and documentation from al-Najah University in Nablus. He established a library for the Palestinian Bar Association and oversaw the project for establishing Salfeet's public library. Moreover, he was a librarian at Dar al-Tefel al-Arabi in Jerusalem. Mr. Afanih was librarian at PECDAR, and also worked in the archives section there. He took several intensive training courses in I.T., information management and library skills.
