Dr. Adel Said Zagha is the Dean of Faculty of Commerce and Economics
and assistant Professor of Economics, teaching different undergraduate and graduate
courses. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Berlin's Freie Universitaet in Germany
and an MA in Economics from Vanderbilt University, USA. He took several scholarships,
including the DAAD PhD Scholarship and the AMIDEAST Masters Scholarship.
Dr. Zagha is an active member in several local and professional societies, including
the Palestinian Economists Association in Palestine. He is also the founding
member and vice-President of the Institute of the Middle East Studies Al-Mamun
(IMSAM), Greece. He is currently head of the Palestine National Training Unit
for the Near East Management Training in Agriculture (NEMTA).
Dr. Zagha has
made dozens of publications, including, of late, "The Palestinian Trade
Policy Options", with Mahmoud Al-Ja'fary and Naser Al-Arda, (MAS: Ramallah),
2002. He is also the author of several books and has written chapters in books
as well as editorials. His forthcoming work is on "Trade and Economic Relations",
in Final Status Negotiations: Economic and Trade Co-operation: A Palestinian
Perspective, edited by Dr. Mohammad Shtayyeh. Moreover, he has participated
in a number of international and local conferences as well as workshops.
Dr. Zagha made several studies and reports, including developing a new strategy
for financing Palestinian higher education.

Dr. Abdul Karim Barghouti is the chairperson of and an assistant professor at the Department of philosophy and Cultural Studies-Birzeit University. He also teaches a course about “Fundamentalism and Globalization” at the Ibrahim Abu Lughod Institute of International Studies. He also used to teach at different institutions, including Department of Humanities, Bethlehem University and Al-Tireh College. Between 2000-2002, Dr. Barghouti was Dean of Student Affairs, Birzeit University.
Dr. Barghouti holds a PhD degree in Philosophy from Moscow State University-Russia
and a Master’s in Laws (LLM) from the Russian Friendship University.
He has different interests, especially curriculum development of different courses at the university, especially in the fields of Democracy and Human Rights and Philosophy and Cultural Studies. In addition, during the academic year 2003-2004, the TTC appointed Dr. Barghouti as their expert and trainer in civic education and curriculum development.
Dr. Barghouti has various publications in different fields, including: “How Do We Read Edward Said?”- 2004, “Palestinian Cultural and Political Identity” -2004, “Islamic Fundamentalism and Globalization” -2004, “The Intellectual Indicators of the Society of Knowledge” – 2004, “The Political Indicators and Limitations of the Palestinian Constitution- 2004, “The Palestinian Constitution and the Fundamentals of Human Sustainable Development-2004, “A Reading in Palestinian Literature after 1967”- 1995, “Islamic Movements and Democracy”- 1995 and others.

Dr. Ali Jarbawi holds a BA degree in Sociology from Birzeit University, An MA in Political Science, an MA in Public Administration and a PhD in Political Science from University of Cincinnati- USA. Dr. Jarbawi has a very ling experience in the academia for he taught in many different local and international institutions. He gave many courses in Political Science and Public Administration. He also worked as a training expert in the fields of Public Administration, Institutional Development, Human Resources Development and Democracy, Civil Society and Human Rights.
Dr. Jarbawi held many positions including: coordinator of the human rights education program at the UNRWA, assistant of Birzeit University president, director of The Ibrahim Abu Lughod Institute of International Studies, secretary General of the Central Elections Committee, assistant of Dean of Art at Birzeit University, Dean of Students’ Affairs and others.
Dr. Jarbawi has many published research including, “ Legal Structure and Democratic Transformation in Palestine”, 1999, Elections and the Palestinian System, 1994, “the Intifada and Political Leaders in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip”, 1986, “Civil Society Institutions in Palestine: an need to reconsider the concept and reality”, 1995, “the Palestinian Future: a Reading of Interventions”, 1994, and others. Moreover, Dr. Jarbawi constantly publishes some analytical and critical works in the daily newspapers.

Dr. Helga Baumgarten is from Germany. She has been Associate Professor
at Birzeit University since February 1993, teaching at the Department of History
and Political Science and at the IALIIS, teaching Political Science in general,
International Relations, Comparative Political Systems and Transformation of
Political Systems in Arab Region. She holds a Ph.D. (Dr.phil) from the Free
University of Berlin and another from G?ttingen University in Political Science,
Sociology, Arabic and History. She also holds an MA in history from the State
University of New York Stony Brook in New York, which she got a Fulbright scholarship
for. Dr. Baumgarten also has the German State Diploma (Staatsexamen) in History
and English from Tübingen University in Germany. Moreover, she was awarded
a scholarship to attend the German School of Journalism in Munich, where she
received a Diploma in Journalism. She was a teaching and research assistant
at SUY Stony Brook in NY, at Tübingen University and G?ttingen University.
She also wrote two books, including one entitled "Arafat between struggle
and diplomacy. A political biography" and dozens of articles, including,
"The Dilemma of Occupation. The Extreme Asymmetry of the Israeli-Palestinian
Conflict".

Dr. Jony A'asi is an assistant professor at the Ibrahim Abu-Lughod Institute
for International Studies (IALIIS). He holds a Ph.D. in Public Law and Political
Science form the Jean Moulin University in Lyon, France. He also holds a "DEA"
in Political Science from the Institut d'Etudes Politiques in Lyon.
Dr. A'asi was a translator and interpreter at courts in Lyon. He is fluent in
Arabic, French, Hebrew and English. His publications and research papers include
an Introduction in "Political Transitions in the Arab World," edited
by Roger Heacock and published the IALIIS. He also did a research project with
the Palestinian Institute for the Study of Democracy, Muwwatin, on "Theories
of Democratic Transition and Consolidation" (in Arabic).

Dr. Nadim Mseis is an assistant professor at the Department of Philosophy and Cultural Studies-Birzeit University. He also teaches a Seminar course at the Ibrahim Abu Lughod Institute of International Studies and used to teach at Bethlehem University. Dr. Mseis has a Kellogg-Recanati International Executive MBA from Northwestern and Tel-Aviv Universities, a DPHIL in History and Politics of the Middle East from St. Antony’s College, University of Oxford, an MSc in Politics from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), University of London, a Postgraduate Diploma in International and Comparative Politics, LSE and a Bachelor Degree in Political Science, Mount St. Mary’s College, USA.
Dr. Mseis participated and gave papers in many local and international seminars and conferences on political and intellectual issues. He also contributed to the development of two courses: Democracy, Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (undergraduate course) and Democracy and Development (Graduate Course). This is in addition to his key contribution to the development of the two main anthologies in Cultural Studies. Moreover, Dr. Mseis participated in the two-week workshop on International Humanitarian Law that was held in Geneva September 2004 and in other seminars and workshops on Human Rights.
Moreover, he attended the joint Oxford University and George Washington University Summer Course in International Human Rights Law, which was held in New College between the 6th of July and 2nd of August 2003 and the summer course on the “European System of Human Rights Protection” held between the 8th and 19th of September 2003 held at the Europa-Universitat Viadrina in Frankfurt Oder, Germany. Throughout the twelve years experience in teaching at Bethlehem and Birzeit Universities, he gave courses in comparative politics, political sociology, theories of development, introduction to sociology, modern and contemporary Arab and European thought, democracy and human rights and other graduate courses in civil society and democratic transformation. Dr. Mseis is currently working on a group of publications, including: “Democracy and the Politics of the Palestinian Left”, by Muwatin, “The Left and the Palestinian-Israeli Peace Process” (joint research project between the sociology and cultural studies departments), “The Left and Palestinian Politics: 1964-2000” by either Cambridge or Oxford University Press and “The Autobiography of Subhi Khoury: An ex-communist.”

Dr. Roger Heacock is a Professor of History and has been at Birzeit
University since 1985. He received his Ph.D. in International Relations (specialization:
European Diplomatic History) from the Graduate School of International Studies,
University of Denver, USA. His immediately preceding position was with the University
of Paris VII. He is a past Director of the IALIIS, which he co-founded. He teaches
in the areas of modern and contemporary European history, Mediterranean history
and the history of international relations. His research interests cover modern
and contemporary Mediterranean and Near Eastern history. He has made several
publications in English, French and German, including of late, his book on "The
Great War: History and the Public Sphere in the Arab East and the Prospects
for Democracy in Palestine" and "Palestine, 1987-2000: From Natural
Law to Positive Law" in the Israel-Palestine Report.

Dr. Samir Abdullah is a professor of Economics. He had his BA in Economics
and Statistics from Jordan University- Jordan. Afterwards, he got both his M.Sc.
and his Ph.D in Economics from Prague University- Czech Republic. Dr. Abdullah
participated in a long list of training courses, especially those related to
project management, strategic planning, negotiation skills and micro-finance.
He works as a part-timer at the institute and has a long experience in teaching,
especially from An-Najah National University, Nablus-Palestine. Along that academic
line, he's a Managing Partner of the Allied Business Consultants (ABC) and director
of MAS Institution. Previously he had a rich experience in Management in different
institutions like Paltrade, the Arab Investment Bank, PECDAR and others. He
was also an ember of the Palestinian Delegation to the bilateral peace negotiations
in Madrid and Washington from 1991 till 1993. Dr. Abdullah participated in many
conferences and big number of those papers was published locally, regionally
and internationally.

Dr. Samir Awad is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Birzeit
University. Dr. Awad had his B.Sc. in Mathematics from Birzeit University. Later
on, he got an MA in International Development from University of Bradford, England.
Then he had an M. Phil. in Political Science and Ph.D. in Comparative Politics
and International Relations from University of Columbia-USA. Dr. Awad has a
long teaching experience abroad. For example, he was a lecturer and a teaching
fellow at the University of Colombia and a lecturer at City University of New
York. He also worked in other universities in the states in areas related to
course content in the fields of International Relations and Comparative Politics.
Dr. Awad worked the research field in different institutions, such as the Center
for Palestine Research and Studies. Dr. Awad has a long list of publications
in many international periodicals like Socialism and Democracy and Third World
Quarterly, as well as local ones, such as Assiyasa Al-Falastineyyeh. He also
participated in many conferences and talk panels in the United States.
