Sustainable wastewater infrastructures imply proper facility management and successful developmental sanitation projects, which starts from planning, design, construction, maintenance and operation. In the West Bank, central sewerage networks served by now about 26% of the urban population and only 6% of the collected municipal wastewater experienced partial or full treatment. Thus, the urban sanitation services are inefficient; calling for urgent research needs aiming at enhancement and development of sustainable urban wastewater treatment facilities. This entails research activities:

·        Evaluation of conventional wastewater treatment plants with respect to facility upgrading, new alternative technologies, process engineering design, process, performance assessment and development of protective operational measures

·        Impact and fate of industrial pollutants on bioprocess performance

·        Chemical and biological nutrient removal (BNR)

·        Bioprocess modeling in activated sludge systems

·        Biosolids and septage management including reuse and disposal technologies
