Rashed Al-Sa’ed

Dr. Rashed Al-Sa`ed graduated from The Faculty of Science, The University of Jordan, with B.Sc. (Biology) in 1981. He then graduated from the same University with M.Sc. (Environmental Microbiology) in 1983. Dr. Al-Sa`ed received his Dr.-Eng. in Sanitary Engineering from the Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany in 1987. He is currently an assistant professor at Birzeit University (BZU) specializing in the field of water and wastewater engineering. Prior to BZU, Dr. Al-Sa`ed worked as an advisor for the Palestinian Water Authority (1996-1997) and as a process engineer and project manager in sanitation sector for German Engineering Firms (1988-1996).

The current research interests have been in the area of water and wastewater management. The focus of his efforts has been on investigations and process performance analysis of existing sewage treatment plants and development of suitable biotreatment technologies. One of the research areas is on the development of a modified UASB septic tank for enhanced pre-treatment of domestic sewage (WASTEVAL II). Another research focus is the development of sustainable post-treatment technologies to improve the overall efficacy of UASB septic tank system. Dr. Al-Sa`ed is organizing his and his colleagues' R&D interests into the one R&D team of the Water and Wastewater Treatment Group. He also initiated the Water Science Technology Program, a multidisciplinary R&D program that brought together colleagues with interests in Environmental Water Quality, Environmental Process Technology, Instrumental Analysis and Water Resources Pollution. Along side with the existing M.Sc. Program in Water Engineering, this has since evolved into the Institute for Water Studies (IWS).
